   "question": "What are the best day trips from Marrakech?",
   "answer": "There is no single answer, because the seven classic trips are very different days. For a waterfall, Ouzoud (160 km, about 3 h 03). For the coast, Essaouira (183 km, about 2 h 41). For heritage, Aït Benhaddou (170 km, about 3 h 18). For mountains close to the city, Imlil or the Ourika Valley (about 1 h 20). For a short desert evening, Agafay (35 km). Choose by the kind of day, then by the drive."
  },
  {
   "question": "What day trips can you do from Marrakech?",
   "answer": "The classic ones are the Agafay desert, the Ourika Valley, Imlil, Oukaïmeden, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou. The first four are under 1 h 40 by road from Jemaa el-Fna and can be half days. The last three take between 2 h 41 and 3 h 18 each way and need a full day, usually leaving around 8:00 and returning in the early evening."
  },
  {
   "question": "Ouzoud or Essaouira: which day trip should I choose?",
   "answer": "They have nothing in common, so pick the kind of day. Essaouira is a walled port on the Atlantic, 183 km away and about 2 h 41 without stops, with a medina listed by UNESCO in 2001, a harbour and a beach. Ouzoud is 160 km away, about 3 h 03, in the High Atlas: a 110 m waterfall in three tiers, a walk to its foot and Barbary macaques. Town and sea air, or nature."
  },
  {
   "question": "Ouzoud or Ourika: which is better?",
   "answer": "Neither is better for everyone. Ouzoud has one large waterfall, 110 m high in three tiers, but it is about 3 hours from Marrakech. Setti Fatma, in the Ourika Valley, is 63 km away, about 1 h 21, with smaller falls reached by a rocky path, villages and riverside cafés. Pick Ouzoud for the spectacle and a full day, Ourika for a short, varied day. Our Ouzoud or Ourika comparison goes into detail."
  },
  {
   "question": "Atlas Mountains or the Ouzoud Waterfalls: which should I do?",
   "answer": "Ouzoud is in the Atlas too, in the central High Atlas, so the real question is the kind of day. Imlil and the Ourika Valley, about 1 h 20 away, are about mountain villages, rivers and walking. Ouzoud, about 3 hours away, is about one big waterfall, a boat ride and macaques. If you dislike long drives or want to hike, choose the closer valleys. If you want the waterfall, choose Ouzoud."
  },
  {
   "question": "Which day trip from Marrakech is easiest with kids?",
   "answer": "With young children, short drives usually matter most. Agafay is only 35 km away and the Ourika Valley about 1 h 21, though its rocks need a steady hand. Ouzoud has a paved path with steps, a boat and macaques that children enjoy, but about 3 hours in the car each way. Pushchairs are hard at Ouzoud and in Ourika. Tell us the ages and we will tell you honestly."
  },
  {
   "question": "What can you do on a half day trip from Marrakech?",
   "answer": "Only the close destinations work as a half day: the Agafay desert (35 km, about 0 h 37), the Ourika Valley (63 km, about 1 h 21), Imlil (65 km, about 1 h 19) and, at a push, Oukaïmeden (77 km, about 1 h 38). Ouzoud, Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou are all more than 2 h 40 away each way, so a half day there means almost no time on site."
  },
  {
   "question": "How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?",
   "answer": "By road, Essaouira is 183 km from Jemaa el-Fna, about 2 h 41 of driving without stops, according to our OpenStreetMap routing of 22 October 2026. It is a little further than Ouzoud (160 km) but faster, because most of the road crosses flat country. With stops, plan about three hours each way and a full day for the trip."
  },
  {
   "question": "Can you do two day trips in one day from Marrakech?",
   "answer": "Two short ones, sometimes: Agafay at sunset can follow a morning in the Ourika Valley or Imlil. Two long ones, no. Ouzoud, Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou lie in different directions, each about 3 hours from Marrakech, so combining two would mean more than eight hours of driving. For the long trips, give each its own day, or sleep on site."
  },
  {
   "question": "Excursions from Marrakech: which one for a first visit?",
   "answer": "For a first visit with one free day, choose the trip that shows something Marrakech cannot: water and green at Ouzoud, the ocean at Essaouira, or an earthen ksar at Aït Benhaddou. With only a few hours, Agafay or the Ourika Valley give you desert or mountain scenery without a long drive. With several days, mix one long trip and one short one."
  }
 ],
 "content_markdown": "Choose by the kind of day first, then by the drive. If you want a big waterfall, go to Ouzoud. If you want the sea and a walled town, go to Essaouira. If you want earthen architecture and film sets, go to Aït Benhaddou. If you want mountains without a long drive, go to Imlil or the Ourika Valley. If you have only an afternoon, go to Agafay. If there is snow and you want to see it, go to Oukaïmeden. The first three need a full day, with 2 h 41 to 3 h 18 of driving each way. The last four are all under 1 h 40 from the city.\n\nWe should say where we stand. On this site we only run trips to Ouzoud: a private tour with a local guide, private transport, a premium day and transfers. We do not sell the other six trips, and we do not earn anything if you choose them. That is why this page rests on road distances we measured the same way for every destination, on published facts with sources at the end, and on plain statements of when another trip suits you better than ours.\n\n## How far is each day trip from Marrakech?\n\nThese are road distances and driving times from Jemaa el-Fna, calculated on OpenStreetMap on 22 October 2026, without stops. Real days add traffic, photo stops and a coffee break, so add 15 to 30 minutes each way.\n\n From Marrakech (Jemaa el-Fna) to Road distance Driving time (no stops) Agafay (Lalla Takerkoust) 35 km 0 h 37 min Setti Fatma (Ourika Valley) 63 km 1 h 21 min Imlil 65 km 1 h 19 min Oukaimeden 77 km 1 h 38 min Ouzoud Waterfalls 160 km 3 h 03 min Ait Benhaddou 170 km 3 h 18 min Essaouira 183 km 2 h 41 min \nTwo groups appear at once. Agafay, the Ourika Valley, Imlil and Oukaïmeden sit between 35 and 77 km from the city. Ouzoud, Aït Benhaddou and Essaouira sit between 160 and 183 km. Note that Essaouira is the furthest in kilometres but faster than Ouzoud or Aït Benhaddou, because its road crosses flat country, while the other two end on mountain roads. For drive times to Ouzoud from other cities, see our page on [distances to Ouzoud](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/ouzoud-distance-from-cities/).\n\n## How do the seven day trips compare at a glance?\n\n| Destination | Type of day | Drive each way | Walking | Suits | Season notes |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| Agafay | Stony desert, sunset, camps | 0 h 37 (35 km) | Very little | Short stays, families, a first taste of desert | Hot at midday in summer, cold after dark in winter |\n| Ourika Valley | River valley, villages, small falls | 1 h 21 (63 km) | Rocky path to the first falls, about 30 minutes | Half days, crafts, a riverside lunch | Strongest falls in spring; summer afternoon storms |\n| Imlil | High mountain village, walking | 1 h 19 (65 km) | From easy village paths to full hikes | Walkers, Toubkal climbers, cool air | Cool in summer, snow on the peaks in winter |\n| Oukaïmeden | High mountain plateau, ski area | 1 h 38 (77 km) | Up to you | Snow in winter, cool air in summer | Skiing only when snow falls |\n| Ouzoud | Waterfall, gorge, olive groves | 3 h 03 (160 km) | Paved path with steps, about 20 minutes down | Waterfall lovers, photographers, families who travel well | Water all year, usually strongest in spring |\n| Essaouira | Atlantic port town, medina, beach | 2 h 41 (183 km) | Flat town walking | Town lovers, seafood, escaping the heat | Cooler than Marrakech in summer, often windy |\n| Aït Benhaddou | Earthen ksar, heritage, film sets | 3 h 18 (170 km) | Short, steep climb to the top of the ksar | Architecture, history, photographers | Mountain pass on the way; winter snow can slow it |\n\n## What is each destination really like?\n\n### Agafay: a stony desert 35 km away\n\nAgafay is a rocky, stony desert plain south-west of Marrakech, often called the \"Marrakech desert\". It is a reg, a stone desert, not an erg of sand dunes, so do not expect the Sahara of postcards: think pale, bare hills, dry riverbeds and, on clear days, the snowy High Atlas on the horizon. The village of Lalla Takerkoust and its large reservoir mark the usual way in, 35 km from Jemaa el-Fna and about 0 h 37 by road.\n\nThe day is short and easy. Most visitors come in the afternoon for a camel ride, a quad or buggy ride, then sunset and dinner in one of the desert camps, some simple, some very comfortable. Walking is minimal. The appeal is the contrast: within 40 minutes of the medina you are in empty, silent country.\n\nHonest limits: it is a landscape, not a sight. If you have already seen real dunes, or plan to go to the Sahara later in your trip, Agafay will feel modest. In summer, midday is very hot, which is why the late afternoon is the usual time. In winter, evenings are cold, so bring a warm layer.\n\n### The Ourika Valley: river, villages and small falls\n\nThe Ourika Valley starts about 30 km south of Marrakech and follows the Ourika river into the High Atlas. Setti Fatma, the village where the paved road ends, is 63 km from Jemaa el-Fna, about 1 h 21 without stops. Along the way there are Berber villages of earth and stone, orchards, argan cooperatives and, on Mondays, the weekly souk at Tnine Ourika.\n\nAbove Setti Fatma, a series of seven small waterfalls climbs a narrow gorge. Most visitors walk to the first ones, about 30 minutes on a steep, rocky path with a few places where you use your hands. Then comes lunch at tables beside the river, reached by small footbridges.\n\nIt is the most flexible trip on this list: a half day works, the drive is short and the day mixes nature and village life. The catches: the falls are modest, and very low in late summer after a dry year; summer weekends and public holidays are busy, as Marrakech families come up to cool off; and in July and August afternoon thunderstorms can make the river rise quickly, so walk in the morning. We compare it with Ouzoud in detail in [Ouzoud or the Ourika Valley](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/ouzoud-or-ourika-valley/).\n\n### Imlil: the village at the foot of Toubkal\n\nImlil is a mountain village at about 1,800 m in the High Atlas, at the end of the tarmac road, 65 km from Jemaa el-Fna and about 1 h 19 by road. It sits below Toubkal, which reaches 4,167 m and is the highest peak in North Africa, inside Toubkal National Park. Imlil is where climbers start, and where guides and mules are hired.\n\nYou do not need to climb anything to enjoy it. A day in Imlil usually means a walk between villages on terraced slopes, walnut trees and stone houses, mint tea on a roof and mountain air that is noticeably cooler than in the city. Walks range from an easy hour to a full day, so this is the trip for people who like to use their legs.\n\nToubkal itself is not a day trip. The normal route takes two days, with a night in a refuge at about 3,200 m. If the summit is your goal, plan at least one night in the mountains and hire a local guide in Imlil. In winter, the paths above the village can be snowy and icy, and the peaks need crampons.\n\n### Oukaïmeden: snow, when there is snow\n\nOukaïmeden is a high plateau and ski area in the High Atlas, 77 km from Jemaa el-Fna, about 1 h 38 by road. Its skiing area lies between about 2,600 m and 3,200 m, with a handful of lifts, ski hire and a few hotels. It is also known for bouldering on its rock blocks.\n\nThe trip makes most sense in two situations. In winter, if snow has fallen, you can ski, sledge or simply walk in the snow less than two hours from palm trees. In summer, the altitude gives cool air and wide views over open high pastures.\n\nBe honest about the snow: it depends on the year. Some winters bring plenty, others very little, and the lifts and slopes are basic compared with Alpine resorts. Check recent conditions before you go, and bring warm clothes in any season, because the air at 2,600 m is far colder than in Marrakech. The last stretch of road climbs steeply with bends; winter snow can make it slow.\n\n### Ouzoud: a 110 m waterfall in three tiers\n\nThe Ouzoud Waterfalls are in Azilal Province, in the central High Atlas, 160 km from Jemaa el-Fna and about 3 h 03 without stops. The Oued Ouzoud drops 110 m in three tiers into the gorge of the Oued El Abid, at about 1,060 m. Entry is free. A paved path with steps and terrace cafés leads down to the foot of the falls in about 20 minutes, and paths run on both banks. At the bottom, small boats take you close to the spray.\n\nAround the falls live free-ranging Barbary macaques, an Endangered species. Research at Ouzoud links feeding by visitors to stress, aggression and the splitting of groups, so watch them, keep a few metres away and do not feed them. The site is also a geosite of the M'Goun UNESCO Global Geopark.\n\nThe honest costs: about six hours in a vehicle over the day, a climb back up that is tiring in the heat, and crowds on summer weekends. The water flows all year; spring usually brings the strongest flow and late summer the lowest. Our page [is Ouzoud worth it](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/are-ouzoud-waterfalls-worth-it/) weighs these points one by one.\n\n### Essaouira: a walled port on the Atlantic\n\nEssaouira, called Mogador until the 1960s, is a fortified port town on the Atlantic, 183 km from Jemaa el-Fna and about 2 h 41 by road. Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah had it built from the 1760s, largely to plans by the French engineer Théodore Cornut, as a port for trade with Europe. Its medina was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.\n\nA day here is about walking a flat town: the ramparts and their cannons, the fishing harbour with its blue boats, the souks and woodwork shops, and a long sandy beach to the south. Fish from the harbour grilled at lunch is part of the visit for many people.\n\nThe trade winds blow often, which keeps the town cooler than Marrakech in summer and brings kitesurfers, but can make the beach unpleasant for sitting. The drive is long but easy. Many travellers find one day too short and prefer to sleep there, which also lets you see the town after the day visitors leave.\n\n### Aït Benhaddou: an earthen ksar on the caravan route\n\nAït Benhaddou is a ksar, a fortified village of rammed earth and adobe, in Ouarzazate Province, on the far side of the High Atlas. It stood on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Many films and series have been shot there, including *Lawrence of Arabia*, *Gladiator* and parts of *Game of Thrones*.\n\nIt is 170 km from Jemaa el-Fna, about 3 h 18 without stops, and the longest drive on this list in time. The road crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with long series of bends, which some travellers love and others find tiring. On site, a short but steep climb through the lanes leads to the old granary at the top, with a view over the valley.\n\nThe honest view: in a single day, the drive takes most of it, and the ksar is busiest in the middle of the day when coaches from Marrakech arrive. If you can, add a night in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, and see the ksar in the evening or early morning light.\n\n## Which day trip suits you?\n\n### A first visit to Morocco\n\nWith one free day, choose the trip that shows what Marrakech cannot: water and green at Ouzoud, the ocean at Essaouira or earthen architecture at Aït Benhaddou. All three need a full day. If you are tired from the journey, start with Agafay or the Ourika Valley.\n\n### One free day, or several\n\nWith one day, pick one long trip or one short trip plus a quiet afternoon in the city. With three or four days, a good rhythm is one long trip, one short trip and a day in Marrakech between them.\n\n### Families\n\nShort drives help most. Agafay suits small children well. The Ourika Valley is close, but its rocks need a steady hand. Ouzoud has an easier paved path, a boat and macaques, but about 3 hours in the car each way: fine for children who travel well, hard for those who get car sick. Our page on [Ouzoud with children](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/ouzoud-with-kids-and-older-travellers/) covers this in detail.\n\n### Hikers\n\nImlil first, then the higher falls of the Ourika Valley. Toubkal needs two days. Ouzoud has pleasant paths on both banks, but it is not a hiking destination.\n\n### Photographers\n\nOuzoud for water, rainbows in the spray and the gorge; Aït Benhaddou for earthen walls in low light; Essaouira for the harbour and the ramparts; Agafay for sunsets over bare hills.\n\n### A very hot summer day\n\nEssaouira is cooler thanks to the ocean wind. Imlil, Oukaïmeden and the Ourika Valley gain altitude and fresher air. At Ouzoud, summer is the swimming season in the pools below the falls. In Agafay, wait for the late afternoon.\n\n### Winter\n\nOukaïmeden if there is snow, Ouzoud for quiet paths and water that flows all year, Essaouira for mild coastal days. Snow can slow the Tichka road to Aït Benhaddou and the paths above Imlil.\n\n## Can you combine two day trips?\n\nTwo short trips can share a day, for example a morning in the Ourika Valley or in Imlil and sunset in Agafay. Two long trips cannot. Ouzoud lies north-east of Marrakech, Essaouira west and Aït Benhaddou south-east, beyond the mountains; each is around 3 hours away, so linking two of them would mean more than eight hours of driving and almost nothing seen.\n\nIf you want more than one long trip, give each its own day, ideally with a calmer day in the city in between. For the furthest places, a night elsewhere changes everything: sleep in Essaouira, in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, in Imlil before Toubkal, or at Ouzoud itself, where our page on [where to stay at Ouzoud](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/where-to-stay-ouzoud/) lists the options.\n\n## Where does Ouzoud fit, and how can we take you there?\n\nOuzoud is the long trip for nature: a big waterfall, a walk down to its foot, a boat and macaques, in the High Atlas rather than on the coast or the far side of the mountains. If that is the day you want, we organise it privately from Marrakech: your own vehicle and driver, your group only, a minivan for 1 to 7 people or a minibus for 8 to 17. Prices are per vehicle, not per person.\n\n| Offer | 1 to 7 people | 8 to 17 people | What it includes |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| [Private tour](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/private-ouzoud-waterfalls-tour/) | 220 € per vehicle | 330 € per vehicle | Vehicle and driver, plus a local guide at the falls |\n| [Private transport](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/private-driver-marrakech-ouzoud/) | 180 € per vehicle | 250 € per vehicle | Return transport, free time at the falls |\n| [Premium private day](https://ouzoudexcursions.com/premium-ouzoud-private-tour/) | 220 € per vehicle + 35 € per person | 330 € per vehicle + 35 € per person | Vehicle, local guide, boat ride and lunch included |\n\nThe day usually starts with pickup around 8:00 at your hotel, or at the nearest gate the vehicle can reach for riads in the medina, gives you 3 to 4 hours at the falls and brings you back in the early evening. Booking is online with a 50% deposit, and cancellation is free up to 48 hours before. Not sure yet?
