In short
In short: the Ouzoud Waterfalls are in Azilal Province, in the central High Atlas, and the road distance from Marrakech is 160 km, about 3 hours of driving (3 h 04 min without stops). From Marrakech Menara Airport it is 164 km. From Casablanca it is 258 km, about 4 hours; from Rabat 336 km (4 h 40 min); from Fès 384 km (6 h 32 min); from Agadir 402 km (5 h 53 min). The nearest towns are Azilal, 37 km away (49 min), and Béni Mellal, 92 km away (1 h 47 min). These figures come from the fastest car route on OpenStreetMap data, measured on 22 October 2026; a real day with breaks is longer. From Marrakech, we run private day trips: a vehicle and driver for your group only, pickup around 8:00 at your hotel or the nearest medina gate, about 3 to 4 hours at the falls and a return in the early evening, from 180 EUR per vehicle.
- Marrakech to Ouzoud: 160 km, about 3 hours
- Casablanca: 258 km, about 4 hours each way
- Fès, Agadir, Essaouira: over 5 hours, better from a Marrakech base
- Azilal 37 km, Béni Mellal 92 km, Bin El Ouidane 67 km
- Figures from OpenStreetMap routing, measured on 22 October 2026
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are 160 km from Marrakech by road, about 3 hours of driving. From Casablanca the distance is 258 km (about 4 hours), from Rabat 336 km, from Fès 384 km and from Agadir 402 km. The closest towns are Azilal (37 km) and Béni Mellal (92 km). In practice, this means Ouzoud is a comfortable full day trip from Marrakech, a long day from Casablanca, and too far for a same-day return from Fès, Agadir or Essaouira.
We drive this road from Marrakech for our private trips, and travellers often ask us how far the falls are from where they are staying. So we measured it properly, from 24 places, with the same method for every row. The table below gives the full results.

Fastest route by car, calculated on OpenStreetMap data (OSRM) on 22 October 2026, from the city centre to the falls (32.0152 N, 6.7189 W). Times exclude traffic, stops and police checks: add 15 to 30 minutes on long drives.
How we measured these distances
We used the fastest car route on OpenStreetMap data, calculated with the OSRM routing engine. Each trip starts from the centre of the town (found with the Nominatim geocoder) and ends at the Ouzoud Waterfalls, at 32.0152 N, 6.7189 W, the coordinates published for the falls on Wikidata. The figures were measured on 22 October 2026.
Three things to keep in mind when you read the table:
- No stops, no traffic. The time is pure driving. A coffee break, a photo stop, roadworks or a slow lorry on a climb all add time. On a real day, add 20 to 30 minutes per 3 hours of driving, and more in summer or on public holidays.
- City centre to the falls. If your hotel is on the far side of a large city, your trip is a little longer or shorter. In Marrakech, for example, a hotel on the north-eastern side of the city starts a few minutes closer to the N8.
- The last kilometres are slow. The final part of every route runs on mountain roads where averages drop. That is already in the calculation, but it explains why 160 km takes 3 hours.
Marrakech to Ouzoud: 160 km, about 3 hours
From Jemaa el-Fna, the route measures 160 km and takes 3 h 04 min without stops. This is the trip most visitors make, and the one we drive every day we have a booking.
The route
You leave Marrakech heading north-east on the N8, the main road towards Béni Mellal and Fès. After the Tamelelt area, the route turns east onto regional roads, follows a short stretch towards Tanant, then takes the R304 north to the village of Ouzoud and the top of the falls. On OpenStreetMap the regional road is numbered R201, but road numbers change over the years and some maps and websites still show older numbers, such as R208. If you drive yourself, follow the signs to Azilal and then Ouzoud rather than a road number.
The landscape
The first part crosses the flat plain around Marrakech, with fields, olive groves and small towns along the main road. Once you leave the N8, the road becomes narrower and starts to climb. The earth turns red, villages sit on the hillsides and the views open over valleys. The falls themselves are at about 1,060 m, in the central High Atlas, so the air is often a little fresher than in Marrakech.
Where people stop
Most drivers make one coffee break at a roadside café roughly halfway, before the road starts to climb. It is a good moment to stretch your legs and use the toilets, because the last part of the drive is winding. On our trips your driver knows the usual places and stops whenever you need.
From Marrakech Menara Airport: 164 km
From Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), the route measures 164 km and takes 3 h 10 min. The airport is on the south-west side of the city, so you cross or skirt Marrakech before joining the N8.
Going straight from a flight to the falls is possible on paper, but we do not recommend it. After an early flight and a 3-hour drive, you would arrive tired in the middle of the day, and the return drive would end late. A better plan is to spend your first night in Marrakech and leave for Ouzoud the next morning, when we can collect you at your hotel or at the gate nearest to your riad pickup point.
From Casablanca and Rabat: about 4 to 5 hours
From Casablanca, the falls are 258 km away, about 4 hours of driving (3 h 50 min on the calculation). From Rabat, they are 336 km away, with 4 h 40 min of driving.
The route
From both cities, the fastest route leaves on the motorway and fast national roads towards Béni Mellal, crossing the farming plains of the interior, before turning south-west onto the regional roads to Azilal and Ouzoud. Khouribga, inland from Casablanca, is 135 km from the falls (2 h 22 min). The final part is the same winding mountain road that everyone takes.
Is it worth it in a day?
From Casablanca, a return trip means about 8 hours of driving plus 3 hours at the falls and breaks: a 12 to 13 hour day. Some travellers do it, leaving before 7:00. From Rabat, it is closer to 10 hours of driving, which is a lot for one day. For both cities, spending a night is more pleasant: in Marrakech, in Béni Mellal, or in a guesthouse near the falls. El Jadida is in the same situation: 338 km and 4 h 39 min.
From Fès and Meknès: plan a night
From Fès, the falls are 384 km away, with 6 h 32 min of driving. From Meknès, it is 343 km and 6 h 02 min. Ifrane, on the same side of the country, is 317 km away (5 h 34 min) and Khénifra 218 km (3 h 49 min).
A return trip from Fès in one day would mean 13 hours of driving, which is not realistic. Ouzoud works much better as a stop between Fès and Marrakech: Khénifra and Béni Mellal lie between Fès and the falls, so Ouzoud fits naturally on an inland route between the two cities. Sleep near the falls or in Azilal, visit in the morning when the paths are quieter, and continue to Marrakech in the afternoon (160 km, about 3 hours).
From Agadir and Essaouira: base yourself in Marrakech
From Agadir, the falls are 402 km away, with 5 h 53 min of driving. From Essaouira, they are 340 km away, with 5 h 35 min. Safi (302 km, 5 h 43 min) and Oualidia (323 km, 5 h 45 min) are in the same range.
For Agadir and Essaouira, the fastest route goes through Marrakech. A same-day return would mean around 11 to 12 hours in a car, before you even walk down to the falls. Even if you manage it, the time on site becomes short and most of the day is spent on the road. Our advice: move to Marrakech for a night or two, and visit Ouzoud from there with a normal 8:00 start.
From Ouarzazate and the south
From Ouarzazate, the falls are 216 km away, with 4 h 05 min of driving. The road crosses the High Atlas, and mountain driving means the real time is often longer than the calculation suggests. From Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara dunes, it is 458 km and 8 h 43 min: only as part of a multi-day route.
If you are touring the south, the logical order is to finish your loop in Marrakech, rest a night, and then do Ouzoud as a separate day. Tanger (586 km, 7 h 24 min) and Chefchaouen (586 km, 8 h 47 min) are also too far for anything but a stop on a longer journey.

The nearby places: Azilal, Béni Mellal, Demnate, Bin El Ouidane
If you are already in the region, Ouzoud is close:
- Azilal: 37 km, 49 min. The provincial capital and the nearest town with shops, banks and fuel. Shared taxis to the falls usually leave from here.
- Demnate: 65 km, 1 h 18 min. A market town south-west of the falls, close to the Imi n'Ifri natural arch, another geosite of the M'Goun UNESCO Global Geopark.
- Bin El Ouidane: 67 km, 1 h 27 min, measured to the village of Bin El Ouidane. The reservoir sits behind a 1953 dam on the Oued El Abid, the river whose gorge the falls drop into.
- Béni Mellal: 92 km, 1 h 47 min. The regional capital, with hotels and good road links to Casablanca, Fès and Marrakech.
From any of these, you can visit Ouzoud in a relaxed half day or combine it with the lake or the arch on the same day.
Is a day trip realistic from your city?
Here is our verdict for the main starting points, based on the one-way driving time and a visit of about 3 hours at the falls.
| City | One way (no stops) | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Azilal | 49 min | Easy day trip, even half a day |
| Demnate | 1 h 18 min | Easy day trip |
| Bin El Ouidane | 1 h 27 min | Easy day trip, can be combined with the lake |
| Béni Mellal | 1 h 47 min | Easy day trip |
| Khouribga | 2 h 22 min | Comfortable day trip |
| Marrakech | 3 h 04 min | Classic full day trip |
| Marrakech airport | 3 h 10 min | Full day, but not on your arrival day |
| Casablanca | 3 h 50 min | Long day, better with a night |
| Ouarzazate | 4 h 05 min | Better with a night |
| El Jadida | 4 h 39 min | Better with a night |
| Rabat | 4 h 40 min | Better with a night |
| Essaouira | 5 h 35 min | Base in Marrakech instead |
| Agadir | 5 h 53 min | Base in Marrakech instead |
| Meknès | 6 h 02 min | Better with a night, as a stop towards Marrakech |
| Fès | 6 h 32 min | Better with a night, as a stop towards Marrakech |
Our rule of thumb: up to about 3 hours each way, a day trip feels like a good day out. Between 3 and 4 hours it is tiring but doable if you start early. Beyond 4 hours each way, you spend more time in the car than at the falls, and a night somewhere closer makes the trip much better.
How does Ouzoud compare with other day trips from Marrakech?
Ouzoud is one of the longer classic day trips from Marrakech. Here are the same measurements, from Jemaa el-Fna, for the destinations visitors usually compare it with.
| From Marrakech (Jemaa el-Fna) to | Road distance | Driving time (no stops) |
|---|---|---|
| Agafay (Lalla Takerkoust) | 35 km | 0 h 37 min |
| Setti Fatma (Ourika Valley) | 63 km | 1 h 21 min |
| Imlil | 65 km | 1 h 19 min |
| Oukaimeden | 77 km | 1 h 38 min |
| Ouzoud Waterfalls | 160 km | 3 h 03 min |
| Ait Benhaddou | 170 km | 3 h 18 min |
| Essaouira | 183 km | 2 h 41 min |
The Agafay desert (35 km), Setti Fatma (63 km), Imlil (65 km) and Oukaïmeden (77 km) are all under 1 h 40 min away, so they fit in a half day or a relaxed day. Ouzoud (160 km), Ait Benhaddou (170 km) and Essaouira (183 km) are in another category: full days with about 3 hours on the road each way. Essaouira is a little further than Ouzoud in kilometres but faster, because most of the road is straight and flat; Ouzoud ends on mountain roads. The small difference with the 3 h 04 min in the first table comes from a slightly different starting point in the medina.
What you get for the extra driving at Ouzoud is a single very large waterfall, 110 m high in three tiers, with a paved path to its foot, boats in the pool and Barbary macaques on the paths. If you are hesitating between the two classic waterfall trips, our comparison of Ouzoud or Ourika sets out the differences in time, walking and atmosphere.
Practical tips for the drive
Fuel
Fill up in Marrakech or in a large town on the main road. Stations become fewer once you leave the N8, and you do not want to look for fuel on the mountain stretch. Azilal is the nearest town with services if you are coming from the east.
Rest stops
There are roadside cafés along the N8 and in the towns on the way. On the last part, stops are mostly small village cafés. At the falls themselves, terrace cafés and restaurants line the path down, so there is no shortage of places to eat once you arrive.
Road conditions
The roads are paved all the way. The last part is a mountain road: narrow in places, with bends, climbs and sometimes no shoulder. Expect slow lorries, people walking along the road, donkeys, sheep and goats. Drive at a speed that lets you stop. Police checkpoints are normal on Moroccan roads, especially at the entrance to towns: slow down, keep your licence, passport and car papers at hand, and respect the speed limits, which are often checked.
Night driving
We advise against driving the mountain roads after dark. Lighting is rare, animals and pedestrians are hard to see, and oncoming headlights on bends are tiring. Plan your day so that you leave the falls in mid-afternoon, especially in winter when night falls early.
Public transport
Without a car, the usual way is a bus or a shared taxi (grand taxi) to Azilal, from Marrakech or Béni Mellal, then a local taxi from Azilal to the falls. It is possible, but timetables change and taxis leave when they are full, so a return the same day from Marrakech is uncertain. Check locally on the day before.
Parking if you drive yourself
There are parking areas near the top of the site, close to the start of the paths. Attendants usually ask for a small fee. Keep valuables out of sight, as you would anywhere.

How we take you to Ouzoud from Marrakech
Our trips start and end in Marrakech. We pick you up around 8:00 at your hotel, or at the medina gate nearest to your riad, drive about 3 hours to the falls, give you about 3 to 4 hours on site and bring you back in the early evening. The vehicle and driver are for your group only: a minivan for 1 to 7 people or a minibus for 8 to 17.
We offer two main formulas:
- Private driver: return transport with free time at the falls. It costs 180 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 250 EUR for 8 to 17. The driver is a driver, not a tour guide; he waits near the top of the site while you visit at your own pace.
- Private tour: the same private transport plus a local guide at Ouzoud for the walk to the falls and the viewpoints. It costs 220 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 330 EUR for 8 to 17.
Prices are per vehicle for your whole group, not per person. You book online with a 50% deposit and pay the balance in cash to the driver on the day. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before, with the deposit refunded in full. All the details, including the boat ride and lunch options, are on our prices page.
If you are staying in Casablanca, Rabat, Fès, Agadir or anywhere else outside Marrakech, contact us on WhatsApp at +212 661 454 738 and tell us your plans. We will answer honestly about what is possible.
To prepare the visit itself, our Ouzoud guide covers the walk down, the boats, the macaques, the seasons and what to bring.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Ouzoud from Marrakech?
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are 160 km from Marrakech by road, measured from Jemaa el-Fna on the fastest car route. The route heads north-east on the N8, then follows regional roads through Azilal Province to the falls. Without stops the drive takes a little over 3 hours, so most visitors go on a full day trip: pickup around 8:00, about 3 to 4 hours at the falls and a return in the early evening.
How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Ouzoud?
Plan about 3 hours each way. The route calculation gives 3 h 04 min of pure driving for 160 km, and a real trip usually adds a coffee break and slower driving on the mountain roads of the last stretch. Leaving Marrakech around 8:00 puts you at the falls in late morning, with time to walk down, have lunch and come back before dark.
How far are the Ouzoud Waterfalls from Casablanca?
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are 258 km from Casablanca by road, about 4 hours of driving without stops (3 h 50 min on the route calculation). A return trip in one day therefore means around 8 hours in a car plus the visit. It is possible for keen travellers who start very early, but many people prefer to spend a night in Marrakech, Béni Mellal or near the falls.
Can I do a day trip to Ouzoud from Casablanca?
Yes, but it is a long day. With about 4 hours each way and 3 hours at the falls, you are looking at a 12 to 13 hour day with breaks. Start very early and avoid driving the mountain roads after dark. Our own trips start and end in Marrakech; if you are in Casablanca, contact us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we can arrange.
How far is Ouzoud from Agadir or Essaouira?
Ouzoud is 402 km from Agadir (5 h 53 min of driving) and 340 km from Essaouira (5 h 35 min). In both cases the fastest route goes through Marrakech. A return trip in one day would mean more than 11 hours of driving, so we advise spending at least one night in Marrakech and visiting the falls from there.
What is the distance between Ouzoud and Fès?
The road distance from Fès to the Ouzoud Waterfalls is 384 km, with 6 h 32 min of driving without stops. From Meknès it is 343 km and 6 h 02 min. This is too far for a return trip in one day. Ouzoud works better as a stop on a journey between Fès and Marrakech, with a night near the falls, in Azilal or in Béni Mellal.
How far is Ouzoud from Béni Mellal and Azilal?
Azilal is the closest town, 37 km from the falls by road, about 49 minutes. Béni Mellal is 92 km away, about 1 h 47 min, by roads that pass near the Bin El Ouidane reservoir. Both towns are easy bases for a half-day or a relaxed full day at Ouzoud, and Azilal is also where shared taxis to the falls usually leave from.
How far is Ouzoud from the Bin El Ouidane lake?
The Bin El Ouidane reservoir is 67 km from the Ouzoud Waterfalls by road, about 1 h 27 min on our calculation, measured to the village of Bin El Ouidane. The lake was created by a dam built in 1953 on the Oued El Abid, the same river whose gorge the falls drop into. Both places fit in one day if you sleep in the area.
How far is Ouzoud from the Ourika area and Setti Fatma?
Setti Fatma is 180 km from the Ouzoud Waterfalls by road (3 h 48 min), because the two sites lie on opposite sides of Marrakech: Setti Fatma is 63 km south of the city, Ouzoud 160 km to the north-east. You cannot sensibly combine them in one day. Our page on Ouzoud or Ourika helps you choose.
