In short
Ouzoud and the Ourika Valley are two different places in opposite directions from Marrakech. The Ouzoud Waterfalls are 160 km away by road, about 3 h 03 without stops, in Azilal Province. The falls drop 110 m in three tiers, and a paved path with steps leads down to their foot in about 20 minutes. Setti Fatma, at the end of the Ourika Valley road, is only 63 km away, about 1 h 21. Its seven waterfalls are much smaller and lie in a narrow gorge, reached by a rocky path with some scrambling. Ouzoud fills a full day, roughly 8:00 to early evening, and suits waterfall lovers, photographers and families whose children walk well. The Ourika Valley suits short stays, half days, travellers who dislike long drives and anyone who wants villages, cooperatives and a riverside lunch. On a trip priced per vehicle, a longer drive usually costs more, shared by your group. The two are 180 km apart, so do them on separate days.
- Ouzoud: 160 km and about 3 h by road; Setti Fatma: 63 km and about 1 h 20
- Ouzoud drops 110 m in three tiers; Ourika has seven smaller falls in a gorge
- Paved path with steps at Ouzoud, rocky scramble in Ourika
- 180 km between the two: not in one day
- Ourika works as a half day, Ouzoud needs a full day
If the waterfall is the reason for your trip, go to Ouzoud. The Ouzoud Waterfalls drop 110 m in three tiers, they are among the highest in Morocco, and nothing in the Ourika Valley compares in size. The price is time: Ouzoud is 160 km from Marrakech by road, about 3 h 03 without stops, so it fills a whole day. If you have little time, dislike long drives or want a gentle mix of river, villages and lunch by the water, go to the Ourika Valley. Setti Fatma, the village at the end of the Ourika road, is only 63 km away, about 1 h 21, and the valley works as a half day.
Both places are in the High Atlas, but they are not the same place, and they lie in different directions from the city. Ouzoud is north-east, in Azilal Province. The Ourika Valley starts about 30 km south of Marrakech, in Al Haouz province. Between the two there are about 180 km of road.
We should say where we stand. We run private day trips to Ouzoud, and only to Ouzoud, so we have an interest in the answer. That is why this comparison rests on measured road distances and published facts, and why we say plainly below when the Ourika Valley is the better choice for you.
How do Ouzoud and the Ourika Valley compare, point by point?
This table sums up the differences that decide most trips. Distances and drive times are road figures from Jemaa el-Fna, calculated on OpenStreetMap; real days add traffic and stops.
| Criterion | Ouzoud Waterfalls | Ourika Valley (Setti Fatma) |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | 160 km, north-east | 63 km to Setti Fatma, south |
| Drive time, no stops | About 3 h 03 each way | About 1 h 21 each way |

| Half day possible? | No | Yes |
| Typical day | About 8:00 to early evening, 3 to 4 hours on site | Half a day to a full day |
The drive is the real difference
Most people choose with the map. From Marrakech, Ouzoud means about six hours in a vehicle over the day, on the N8 towards Fès and then regional roads through the countryside of Azilal Province. The Ourika road is short: after about 30 km you reach Tnine Ourika at the entrance of the valley, then the road follows the river upstream to Setti Fatma, where the paved road ends.
Six hours in a car is fine for some travellers and miserable for others. Be honest with yourself and with your group about this one point, and the rest of the choice becomes much easier.
The waterfalls are not in the same league
At Ouzoud, the Oued Ouzoud (also called the Oued Tissakht) falls 110 m in three tiers over Jurassic limestone into the gorge of the Oued El Abid. You see the whole drop from the top, then walk down to the foot of the falls and look up at it. In the Ourika Valley, the falls above Setti Fatma are a chain of seven, one above the other in a narrow gorge. Most visitors stop at the first ones. They are lovely in spring, with water dropping into a rock pool between boulders, but if you expect one huge curtain of water, the Ourika gorge will disappoint you.

The walk feels very different
The Ouzoud walk is long in steps but simple underfoot: a paved path lined with stalls and terrace cafés goes down to the foot of the falls in about 20 minutes, and paths run on both banks. The hard part is the climb back up, especially in the heat. The Ourika walk is short but rough: the path to the first falls is steep and rocky, with a few places where you use your hands on boulders, and the rocks near the water stay wet and slippery.
What fills the rest of the day
At Ouzoud, the falls are the whole show, and there is plenty around them: a small boat at the foot of the falls, a free-living troop of Barbary macaques on the paths, traditional mills in an olive-grove setting, and terrace restaurants serving tajines. In the Ourika Valley, the falls are only one part of the day. Along the road there are women's argan cooperatives, potters and Berber villages, and at Setti Fatma you eat at tables beside the river, reached by small footbridges. If you travel on a Monday, the weekly souk at Tnine Ourika adds a market to the morning.
Who should choose Ouzoud?
Ouzoud rewards travellers who accept the drive in exchange for one strong memory. It is the right choice in these cases.
Waterfall lovers and photographers
If you have come to see a big waterfall, there is no contest within easy reach of Marrakech. At Ouzoud you can frame the falls from the top, from the paths on both banks and from water level. The water drops in tiers, so there is always another angle.
A first trip with one full free day
If this is your first time in Morocco and you have a full day to spend outside the city, Ouzoud shows you a different side of the country: the plain, then the hills and olive groves of Azilal Province, then the gorge. It is a long day, but a complete one.
Families whose children walk well
The paved path with steps is easier for small legs than the rocky scramble in the Ourika gorge, and children usually love the boat and the macaques. The catch is the time in the car. If your children travel well, Ouzoud is a good family day. If they do not, the Ourika Valley is kinder.
Winter visitors
Ouzoud is fed by a karst spring, and the water flows all year. Winter is cooler and quieter on the paths. In the Ourika gorge, winter brings cold, shaded rock and sometimes ice after cold nights, so the walk to the falls needs more care.

Who should choose the Ourika Valley?
The Ourika Valley is the more flexible of the two, and in several situations it is simply the better answer. We tell our own guests so.
Travellers with limited time
If you have only a morning or an afternoon, Ouzoud is out of reach and the Ourika Valley is not. With about 1 h 20 of driving each way, you can see Setti Fatma, walk to the first falls and be back in Marrakech the same afternoon.
People who dislike long drives
Car sickness, small children, older travellers who find long journeys tiring, or simply a wish not to spend the holiday in a vehicle: all good reasons to stay closer. Six hours on the road for three or four hours at the falls is not a fair trade for everyone.
Hikers
The Ourika Valley offers more real walking. Above the first falls, the path climbs to the higher ones on rougher, quieter ground, for fit and sure-footed walkers with a local guide. There are also walks between villages on the slopes. Ouzoud has pleasant paths and a loop on both banks, but it is not a hiking destination.
Travellers who want village life and crafts
In the Ourika Valley, the day mixes nature and people: an argan cooperative, a potter, a village of earth houses, the Monday souk. At Ouzoud, you meet the life of the site, with its cafés, stalls and mills, but the visit centres on the falls.
Very hot summer days
Both places help on a hot day. At Ouzoud, summer is the swimming season, and people bathe in the pools at the foot of the falls and downstream. The Ourika Valley climbs to about 1,500 m at Setti Fatma, while Marrakech sits at about 450 m, so the air by the river is cooler and the drive is short. Keep the Ourika storm risk in mind, though (see below).
Your situation, our suggestion
| Your situation | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| You want one big waterfall | Ouzoud |
| Only half a day free | Ourika Valley |
| You dislike long drives | Ourika Valley |
| Photography is the main goal | Ouzoud |
| Children who walk well and travel well | Ouzoud |
| Toddlers or children who get car sick | Ourika Valley |
| You want to hike | Ourika Valley |
| Winter visit, quiet paths | Ouzoud |
| Crafts, cooperatives, a market | Ourika Valley |
Can you do both on the same day?
No. Setti Fatma and Ouzoud are about 180 km apart by road, about 3 h 48 of driving without stops, and they sit in different directions from Marrakech. Add the 1 h 21 out to Setti Fatma and the 3 h 03 back from Ouzoud, and you reach more than eight hours of pure driving, before a single stop, a meal or a walk. You would see both places through a window and neither on foot.
If you want both, give each its own day:
- Two separate days. One day for Ouzoud, one day for the Ourika Valley, ideally with a quieter day in Marrakech in between.
- Ourika as a half day. If your stay is short, keep the full day for Ouzoud and see the Ourika Valley on a morning, with the afternoon free in the city.
- Ourika first, Ouzoud later. Some travellers like a short day to begin with, then the long one once they have settled in.
How far are they from Marrakech, compared with other day trips?
Here are the road distances from Jemaa el-Fna to the classic day trips, calculated the same way for every destination (OpenStreetMap routing, driving time without stops):
| From Marrakech (Jemaa el-Fna) to | Road distance | Driving time (no stops) |
|---|---|---|
| Agafay (Lalla Takerkoust) | 35 km | 0 h 37 min |
| Setti Fatma (Ourika Valley) | 63 km | 1 h 21 min |
| Imlil | 65 km | 1 h 19 min |
| Oukaimeden | 77 km | 1 h 38 min |
| Ouzoud Waterfalls | 160 km | 3 h 03 min |
| Ait Benhaddou | 170 km | 3 h 18 min |
| Essaouira | 183 km | 2 h 41 min |
Two things stand out. Ouzoud is one of the longest classic day trips from Marrakech, in the same range as Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou. The Ourika Valley, Imlil and Oukaïmeden form the close group, all under 80 km. If you are coming from another city, or want to compare drive times from elsewhere, see our page on distances to Ouzoud from every city.
When should you go to each?
Ouzoud through the year
The water at Ouzoud comes from a karst spring and flows all year. Visitors and guides usually describe the strongest flow in spring and lower water in late summer, partly because water is taken for irrigation. There is no published flow data, so treat this as a pattern, not a promise. Summer is hot and busy, especially at weekends, but it is the season for swimming in the pools. Autumn and winter are cooler and quieter. After heavy rain, the water can turn red-brown for a while.
The Ourika Valley through the year
The Ourika falls depend on rain and snow on the High Atlas peaks. They are strongest in spring, roughly March to May, with the snowmelt. In summer the flow drops, and after a dry year the first fall can be a thin stream by late summer or early autumn. Summer is the season of lunches by the river, when Marrakech families come up to cool off, so weekends are busy. Winter days are often clear, with snow on the peaks, but the gorge is cold and shaded.
Summer storms in the Ourika Valley
This is the one safety point that separates the two trips. In July and August, heat over the mountains often builds afternoon thunderstorms above the Ourika Valley, and rain falling high up can make the river rise quickly, sometimes while the sky over Setti Fatma still looks fine. The valley remembers a deadly flood in August 1995. In summer, walk to the falls in the morning, be back in the village by early afternoon, and leave the riverbed at the first sign of thunder or brown water.
| Season | Ouzoud | Ourika Valley |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Usually the strongest flow, green valley | Strongest falls with the snowmelt, orchards in blossom |
| Summer | Hot, busy at weekends, swimming season | Cooler than the city, busy weekends, afternoon storms |
| Autumn | Quieter, lower water early in the season | Calm, clear light, falls at their lowest |
| Winter | Cool and quiet, water still flowing | Cold, shaded gorge, snow on the peaks |
What practical tips should you know for each?
At Ouzoud
- Leave early. With about 3 hours on the road, an 8:00 departure gives you 3 to 4 hours at the falls without rushing.
- Entry is free. There is no ticket for the falls. Bring cash in small notes for drinks, lunch, the boat and tips.
- Wear shoes with grip. The path is paved, but steps and spray make some stretches slippery near the water.
- Save energy for the climb back. Go down slowly, stop at a terrace café, and climb back up in the cooler part of the day if you can.
- Do not feed the macaques. The Barbary macaques at Ouzoud are an Endangered species. Research at Ouzoud links food from visitors to more competition and aggression in the troop and to the group splitting. Keep a few metres away and keep food out of sight.
- Swim with care. Stay away from the strong water under the falls and keep children within reach.
Our full Ouzoud Waterfalls guide covers the route, the walk, the boat and what to bring in more detail.
In the Ourika Valley
- Wear closed shoes with a good grip. The path to the falls is rocky and wet; flip-flops and smooth sandals do not work.
- Keep your hands free. A small backpack is better than bags, since a few moves need both hands.
- Consider a local guide for the falls. Setti Fatma has an office of local guides near the footbridge where the path starts. Agree on the price and how far you want to go before you leave.
- Arrive early on weekends. Parking fills on summer weekends and public holidays, and the path to the first falls can turn into a queue.
- Agree on prices in riverside restaurants before you sit down, and ask whether drinks are included.
- Watch the sky in summer. Walk in the morning, and come down at once if the water turns brown or starts rising.

Frequently asked questions
Ouzoud or the Ourika Valley: which is better?
Neither is better for everyone. Ouzoud is the stronger choice if the waterfall itself is the point: it drops 110 m in three tiers and is among the highest in Morocco, but it is about 3 hours from Marrakech by road. The Ourika Valley is closer, about 1 h 20 to Setti Fatma, with smaller falls, villages and riverside cafés. Pick Ouzoud for the spectacle, Ourika for a shorter, varied day.
Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls in the Ourika Valley?
No. This is a common mix-up. The Ouzoud Waterfalls are in Azilal Province, in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, about 160 km north-east of Marrakech. The Ourika Valley is in Al Haouz province, about 30 km south of Marrakech, and its falls are the seven waterfalls above the village of Setti Fatma. By road, the two places are about 180 km apart.
Ouzoud Waterfalls or Ourika waterfalls: which are more impressive?
Ouzoud, clearly, if size is what you are after. The Oued Ouzoud drops 110 m in three tiers into the gorge of the Oued El Abid, and you see it from viewpoints, from the foot of the falls and from a small boat. The Ourika waterfalls above Setti Fatma are a series of smaller falls in a narrow gorge. They are charming, especially in spring, but they are not one big show.
Can you do Ouzoud and the Ourika Valley in one day?
Not realistically. Setti Fatma and Ouzoud are about 180 km apart by road, about 3 h 48 of driving, and they lie in different directions from Marrakech. Add the drive out and back and you would spend more than eight hours in the car with almost no time at either place. Plan two separate days, or do the Ourika Valley as a half day on another date.
What is the distance between Ouzoud and the Ourika Valley?
By road, it is about 180 km from Setti Fatma, at the end of the Ourika Valley road, to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, for about 3 h 48 of driving without stops, according to our OpenStreetMap routing of 22 October 2026. For comparison, Ouzoud is 160 km from central Marrakech (about 3 h 03) and Setti Fatma is 63 km from Marrakech (about 1 h 21).
Which is better with kids, Ouzoud or Ourika?
It depends on age and on how well they cope with the car. Ouzoud has a paved path with steps, easier for small legs than the rocky scramble to the first Ourika falls, but about 3 hours' drive each way. The Ourika Valley is much closer and can be a half day, but young children need to be held on the rocks. Pushchairs are hard in both places.
Atlas Mountains or the Ouzoud Waterfalls: which day trip should I choose?
Both are in the High Atlas: Ouzoud lies in the central High Atlas, in Azilal Province. The difference is the kind of day. A trip into the Atlas valleys near Marrakech, such as Ourika or Imlil, is about 1 h 20 each way and is about villages, rivers and walking. Ouzoud is about 3 hours each way and is about one large waterfall, macaques and a boat ride.
Essaouira or the Ouzoud Waterfalls: which is the better day trip?
They are completely different days. Essaouira is a walled port town on the Atlantic, 183 km from Marrakech (about 2 h 41 without stops): ramparts, harbour, beach and sea air. Ouzoud is 160 km away (about 3 h 03): a 110 m waterfall in the High Atlas, a walk down to its foot and Barbary macaques. Choose the coast for a town, Ouzoud for nature.
When is the best time to visit Ouzoud and the Ourika Valley?
Spring suits both. At Ouzoud, water flows all year, and visitors and guides usually report the strongest flow in spring and lower water in late summer. In the Ourika Valley, the falls are strongest with the spring snowmelt and often low by late summer. In July and August, Ourika's afternoon storms can make the river rise quickly, so walk there in the morning.
