The day, step by step
Pickup in Marrakech
Around 8:00 the driver meets you at the hotel entrance, or at the nearest gate or car park if you stay in a riad in the medina.
Drive to Ouzoud
About three hours north-east through the Haouz plain towards Azilal Province. Ask the driver if you need a break on the way.
Arrival and meeting time
The driver parks near the top of the site and agrees with you a time to meet back at the vehicle. From there, the time is yours.
Free time at the falls
About three to four hours to walk down to the foot of the falls, take the boat, eat on a terrace and look for the macaques, at your own pace.
Return to Marrakech
At the agreed time you meet the driver and head back. You arrive in Marrakech in the early evening, at your hotel or medina meeting point.
Private transport to Ouzoud, in brief
This offer is simply the car and the driver. A private vehicle picks up your group in Marrakech around 8:00, drives about three hours to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, and waits while you spend three to four hours at the falls on your own. You are back in Marrakech in the early evening. The price is per vehicle, confirmed in writing before you pay.
It suits travellers who like to explore at their own pace, people who have read up on the site, and anyone returning to Ouzoud.
Driver or guide: what is the difference?
This is the question we are asked most, so here is a clear answer.
| Driver (this offer) | Local guide (option or tour) | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Drives you from Marrakech and back | Walks with you at the falls |
| Where | In the vehicle and at the car | On the paths, viewpoints and terraces |
| Explains the site | No, that is not his job | Yes: paths, mills, macaques, history |
| Helps with the boat and lunch | Can point you in the right direction | Takes you there and helps you choose |
| Included | Always | In the private Ouzoud tour and premium day, or as an option here |
The driver is a professional driver working for a licensed transport company. His job is to get you there and back safely and on time. He does not walk the site with you and he is not presented as a guide. If you want commentary and someone on foot with you, add a local guide or choose the guided tour.
What you can do on your own at Ouzoud

Three to four hours is a comfortable amount of time. Here is what most visitors manage alone:
- Walk down to the foot of the falls. A paved path lined with terrace cafés and craft stalls goes down in about 20 minutes. It has steps and slopes, so wear shoes with grip.
- See the falls from above. Before going down, walk to the upper viewpoints for the full 110 m drop in three tiers.
- Take the boat ride. Small rafts take visitors close to the base of the falls. You pay the boatman directly if you did not book it with us.
- Eat on a terrace. Restaurants by the water serve tajines and mint tea. Lunch takes about an hour.
- Watch the macaques. Barbary macaques live around the falls. They are an endangered species, and feeding them harms their health and behaviour, so watch from a distance and keep food in your bag.
- Cross to the other bank. Paths run on both sides of the gorge. Going down one side and up the other gives a different view, but allow extra time.
If that sounds like a lot to organise alone, the private Ouzoud tour adds a guide who handles the route.
Is transport only right for you?
Choose the private driver if most of these sound like you:
- You are comfortable finding your way on a well-used path without explanations.
- You would rather set your own pace than follow someone.
- You have visited Ouzoud before, or read our Ouzoud travel guide.
- You are happy to say no politely to offers on the path, and to pay the boatman or a restaurant directly.
If you hesitate on two or more points, the private Ouzoud tour is probably a better fit: same vehicle, same day, plus a local guide for the walk.
Exploring safely on your own
A few simple habits make the day easier. Wear shoes with grip, as the steps near the water can be wet. Keep an eye on children close to the edges and at the foot of the falls. Do not hand food to the macaques and keep snacks in a closed bag, since they are used to being fed and can grab. Agree a realistic meeting time with the driver, keeping in mind that the climb back up takes longer than the way down. In summer, some visitors swim in the pools downstream; if you do, judge the conditions yourself and stay away from the strong current under the falls.
Options you can add
- Local guide at the falls: someone from the area meets you on arrival and leads the walk. More on what a local guide does.
- Boat ride: booked in advance and included in your total.
- Lunch: a meal on a terrace by the falls. Tell us about dietary needs, such as vegetarian, when you book. See boat and lunch.
Add the options you want in your request and we send one total price. With all three, the premium private day is usually the simpler formula.
How the day works with the driver
On arrival, the driver parks near the top of the site and agrees a meeting time and place with you. Save his phone number. Walk down, enjoy the falls, and come back up at the agreed time. If someone in the group is tired and wants to return earlier, you can head back to the vehicle and wait there.
The vehicle is a 7-seat minivan for 1 to 7 people or a 17-seat minibus for 8 to 17. It is for your group only for the whole day.
Price, payment and cancellation
The price is per vehicle for your whole group. It depends on the size of the vehicle and the options you add. You receive the total in writing before any payment, then pay a 50% deposit online by PayPal or bank card through PayPal. The balance is paid in cash to the driver on the day. Tips are entirely up to you.
Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the trip. If the weather makes the trip unsafe, you choose between a new date and a full refund of the deposit. Read the steps on how to book.

Frequently asked questions
Does the driver guide us at the falls?
No. On the private transport offer, the driver is a driver, not a tour guide. He takes you to Ouzoud, agrees a meeting time with you and stays with the vehicle while you explore. If you want someone to walk with you and show you the paths and viewpoints, add a local guide as an option or choose the private Ouzoud tour.
How much free time do we get at Ouzoud?
You have about three to four hours at the falls. That is enough to walk down to the foot of the falls, take the boat ride, have lunch on a terrace and climb back up without rushing. You agree the exact meeting time with the driver when you arrive, depending on your pickup time and the season.
Can we visit Ouzoud on our own without a guide?
Yes. A paved path with terrace cafés leads down to the foot of the falls in about 20 minutes, and it is easy to follow. Paths also run along both banks. Many visitors explore alone. A guide becomes useful if you want to see both banks, find the quieter viewpoints or visit with young children. Read what a local guide does.
What options can we add to the private transport?
Three options: a local guide at the falls for the walk and viewpoints, the boat ride at the foot of the falls, and lunch on a terrace by the water. Tell us which ones you want when you send your request, and we include them in the total price. If you want all three, the premium private day is the simpler choice.
Will people approach us offering to guide us?
It can happen. Informal local guides are common at Ouzoud and may offer their services on the path. A polite no is enough if you prefer to walk alone. If you would like a guide, it is simpler to add one when you book, so the price is agreed in advance and included in your total.
Is the private transport cheaper than the guided tour?
Yes, because it does not include the guide. The price is per vehicle for your whole group and depends on the number of travellers and the options you add. We send the total in writing before any payment. The prices page explains what changes the total, without surprises on the day.
Can we change the meeting time once we are at the falls?
Within reason, yes. Tell the driver as early as possible if you want a little more or less time, and keep in mind the three-hour drive back to Marrakech. The driver has his phone with him, so you can reach him from the site. We suggest saving his number at the start of the day.
